A Two-Week Musical Theatre Experience for Young Performers

At Medway Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA), we believe young performers deserve exciting, ambitious and unforgettable opportunities to shine. Each year, alongside our weekly Singing, Dancing and Acting classes, we produce our much-loved Summer Youth Musical — an intensive two-week musical theatre experience that gives children and young people the chance to rehearse and perform a full-scale production!

Last year, our talented cast successfully staged the iconic Les Misérables: School Edition, and this year was no different. MAPA proudly brought the energy, excitement and timeless music of Grease the Musical to The GlassBox Theatre at MidKent College, giving our young performers the chance to experience the thrill of live theatre in a professional venue.

Producing a Musical in Just Two Weeks

The idea behind MAPA’s Summer Youth Musical is simple but ambitious: to rehearse and stage a full musical in just two weeks.

Rehearsals for Grease the Musical began on Monday 27th July, and from the very first day, our cast threw themselves into the process with energy, commitment and enthusiasm. During the first week, the full show was taught, including scenes, songs, harmonies, choreography, staging and direction.

By the first Friday, the cast had already completed their first full run of the show — an incredible achievement and a real testament to their focus, teamwork and resilience.

That same Friday, costumes arrived and were tried on, helping the production come to life and giving the cast their first exciting glimpse of the world of Rydell High.

Learning Iconic Songs, Harmonies and Original Choreography

Grease the Musical is packed with instantly recognisable songs, memorable characters and high-energy ensemble numbers. Our cast worked incredibly hard to learn the show’s iconic music, detailed harmonies and brand-new original choreography created especially for this production.

Throughout rehearsals, students developed their skills in:

• Singing and vocal harmonies

• Dancing and choreography

• Acting and characterisation

• Staging and direction

• Ensemble performance

The final piece of content, the Grease Megamix, was taught on Monday of week two, marking the beginning of the final rehearsal week. By this point, the cast had already achieved something remarkable: they had learned, staged and rehearsed a full musical theatre production in just over a week.

From Rehearsal Room to Theatre

One of the most exciting parts of MAPA’s Summer Youth Musical is seeing the show move from the rehearsal room into the theatre.

On Tuesday 4th August, the set arrived at The GlassBox Theatre, MidKent College, transforming the space ready for the production. In one of our upcoming blogs, we will be sharing a time-lapse of the set going in — so keep your eyes peeled!

This moment is always special for our students. Seeing the set, lighting, costumes and band come together helps them understand the many moving parts involved in producing a full-scale musical. It gives young performers a real insight into the inner workings of theatre and what happens behind the scenes before an audience ever takes their seats.

Working with a Live Orchestra

On Wednesday 5th August, our fantastic nine-piece orchestra had their band call, bringing the music of Grease to life in a whole new way.

Later that same afternoon, the cast joined the orchestra for their sitzprobe — a hugely exciting moment where performers sing through the score with the live band for the first time. For many young actors, this is one of the most memorable parts of the process.

Singing with a live orchestra gives students a taste of the professional musical theatre world and helps them understand the energy, timing and discipline required in live performance.

Experiences like this are what make MAPA’s Summer Youth Musical so special. Students are not just learning songs and steps; they are experiencing what it feels like to be part of a professional-style theatre company.

Technical Rehearsal, Dress Rehearsal and Opening Night

On Thursday 6th August, the cast took part in their technical rehearsal, working with lighting, sound, staging and scene changes to ensure the production ran smoothly.

The following afternoon, on Friday 7th August, the cast completed their dress rehearsal before opening night that evening. After two weeks of hard work, energy and dedication, the students stepped onto the stage ready to perform for a live audience. Following opening night, the cast went on to perform three more incredible shows!

Every performance was filled with energy, confidence and joy. Our cast were absolutely phenomenal, and we could not be prouder of everything they achieved!

Building Confidence, Friendships and Life Skills

MAPA’s Summer Youth Musical is about far more than putting on a show. Throughout the process, students build confidence, make wonderful friends and learn how to work together as a company of young actors. They develop resilience, focus, communication skills and teamwork while experiencing the excitement and challenge of producing live theatre.

For many children and young people, performing arts helps them grow in ways that extend far beyond the stage. They learn how to support one another, take direction, overcome nerves, solve problems creatively and commit to a shared goal.
